This Hawaiian Wedding holoku pays tribute to Queen Kaahumanu, no doubt the most influential of Hawaiian women. Only a most regal holoku, a blending of Hawaiian culture and Western influence, would be fitting of Hawaii's beloved Queen, who cherished her people and the Hawaiian culture, yet was at the forefront of utilizing Western culture to modernize Hawaii. This beautiful holoku is also amazingly comfortable with a zippered back. Made of our exclusive lau`ae rayon. Made in Hawaii. Machine washable. A wonderful marriage between our Ali`i Wedding line and our new Laua`e Collection. The comfort and beautiful style of this wedding holoku has made it our most popular beach wedding dress.
The real Queen Kaahumanu was, no doubt, one of the most influential figures in Hawaiian history. The favorite wife of King Kamehameha the Great, she was also beloved by the people of Hawaii and widely respected. A feminist even before the concept had a name, she was a surfer and is credited with abolishing the kapu or taboo system of ancient Hawaii, thus women were then allowed to eat with men, and allowed to eat certain foods, such as bananas. Queen Kaahumanu became the first kuhina nui, or co-ruler, alongside King Liholiho, and was, at times, the sole ruler over Hawaii. Her strength and commitment to her people will forever be remembered.
